Edward DuCharme

Obituary of Edward Delano DuCharme

It is with profound sadness that our family announces the peaceful passing of Edward D. DuCharme at the Queensway Carleton Hospital, with his beloved wife Monique and son Douglas at his side. His much-loved granddaughter Nyiri was close by, as well as his daughter-in-law Elaine. Edward was predeceased by his parents and his four Collins half-siblings in Alberta.

A dedicated public servant for 39 years, Edward's professional career was in telecommunications, from short wave to satellite. He was in on the ground with Canada's early communications satellites - the Alouette-I and II (1962 and 1965) - scientific satellites that marked Canada's entry into the space age. He continued work with the federal government at the Defence Research Board and then-Department of Communications in Ottawa. There he worked to negotiate Canada's global frequency allocations and technical agreements through the International Telecommunication Union conferences in Geneva and around the world. Towards the end of his career, and after retirement, Edward continued to contribute to the academic discipline, and shared his knowledge by lecturing at the McGill Institute of Air and Space Law in Montreal, as well as at the International Space University in Strasbourg, France.

Edward was also a faithful member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Ottawa, serving many years as an elder.

We want to thank Dr. Huang, the nursing staff of the ACE Unit, and Dr. Bhimji of the Palliative Care team at the Queensway Carleton Hospital for their incredible care, kindness, and support. We are also grateful to the staff of Forest Hill in Kanata. Due to COVID-19 constraints, a memorial service in celebration of Edward's life will be held at a later date. Condolences, tributes may be made at https://pinecrest-remembrance.com. If desired, donations in Edward's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be most appreciated.
